The Appeal of the "Ugly Face"

Postby Tohru » Thu Feb 13, 2020 3:26 am

Lately I've been completely enamoured with any series where the artstyle dramatically changes the mc from normal to ugly face. The impact is just hilarious. Whenever I see it used in the beginning of a series I instantly get that "struck gold" feeling and can read on with confidence I will die a little inside from the pristine over the top humour to come. The only series I've seen it used in recently though are "Miss Not So Sidekick" and "Love Advice from the Great Duke of Hell."

Anyone else feel that pang through the soul when you see the ridiculous contrast in artstyle calling rise for your depravity to bubble forth? :bleed: Just me maybe >:)

I'll admit I'm a sucker for that kind of comedy delivery.
I think my taste doesn't exactly align with yours, since I usually see that kind of ugly face contrast in shounen comedy action series, but I do find that https://mangadex.org/title/24165/the-li ... -300-years does expressions quite well. Also it seems to be more frequent in korean comics than it is in japanese. But maybe I'm just imagining it X3

Please check out Grand Blue (https://mangadex.org/title/16313/grand-blue). This series is absolutely FILLED with normal to immediate ugly faces. Readers call them oni faces, but the artwork is so damn good that it's beautiful.

Ohhh thank you so much ^_^ I'm so glad I made this thread. I love this trope so much! I'll be sure to check it out <3_<3

Oh no, I would definitely agree with you. It really is more prevalent in Korean comics from what I've seen.
I should check that series out as well!
As for shounen comedy, I enjoy them a lot if they have a lot of action. A good example of a great shounen series using that kind of comedy is "King of Hell."

oooh, king of hell? It's been yearsssss since I've read that one. I think updates got slow for a while, so I put it down and forgot it. Now that's it's finished, I'm most afraid of the ending being not great.

In terms of depraved korean comedy series I'd suggest https://mangadex.org/title/2/zippy-ziggy . I'm really fond of this one. Leans a bit towards school life though.
I'll also second grand blue.
If you want something depraved, clever, and full of references (and a little different) I recommend https://mangadex.org/title/38049/franken-fran-frantic
